    Graphic Design: The New Basics

Graphic Design: The New Basics Review

Graphic Design: The New Basics Overview

How do designers get ideas? Many spend their time searching for clever combinations of forms, fonts, and colors inside thedesign annuals and monographs of other designers' work. For those looking to challenge the cut-and-paste mentality thereare few resources that are both informative and inspirational. In Graphic Design: The New Basics, Ellen Lupton, best-selling author of such books as Thinking with Type and Design It Yourself, and design educator Jennifer Cole Phillips refocus design instruction on the study of the fundamentals of form in a critical, rigorous way informed by contemporary media, theory, and software systems.

Through visual demonstrations and concise commentary, The New Basics shows students and professionals how to build interest and complexity around simple relationships between formal elements of two-dimensional design such as point, line, plane, scale, hierarchy, layers, and transparency. The New Basics explains the key concepts of visual language that inform any work of designfrom a logo or letterhead to a complex web site. It takes a fresh approach to design instruction by emphasizing visually intensive, form-based thinking in a manner that is in tune with the latest developments in contemporary media, theory, art, and technology. Colorful, compact, and clearly written, The New Basics is the new indispensable resource for anyone seeking a smart, inspiring introduction to graphic design and destined to become the standard reference work in design education.

Architecture and Design Library: Retro-Modern (Arch & Design Library)

Architecture and Design Library: Retro-Modern (Arch & Design Library) Review

Architecture and Design Library: Retro-Modern (Arch & Design Library) Overview

With roots in prewar Germany, modernism leapt to popularity in postwar America. Advocated by architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius (who fled the encroaching Nazi movement and settled in the U.S.), modernism blended functionality with frugality. Between 1945 and 1960, architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and designers like George Nelson revolutionized the home landscape. Today, modernism is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Filled with incredible photographs of classic modern homes and beautifully spare rooms, Retro Modern is well researched and admirably demonstrates the intersection of history, society, and the arts.

The clean, cool lines of modern architecture was a direct rebuttal to the neoclassical styles that came before. Rooms flowed into one another and often included floor-to-ceiling glass walls to open the house to the natural world. "The new structures placed emphasis on efficiency and function, as well as informality and comfort," says author Lisa Skolnik. Inside, bold, spare furnishings like low-slung sofas and ovoid glass coffee tables were arranged with minimum clutter and often featured built-in furniture to keep the space open and airy. Clocks, lamps, and glassware took on asymmetrical and free-form shapes; most popularly, kidneys, amoebas, and boomerangs. That lime-green Egg chair of grandma's--which you thought hideous as a child--would now be snapped up in a second by a savvy collector.

A paean to midcentury America and Europe, a nod to designers and architects whose influence is still felt today, and an inspiration to aficionados, Retro Modern is as clear and streamlined as the movement it celebrates. --Dana Van Nest

This collection of 30 original designs by artisans from around the globe illustrates the versatility of the chest, one of the oldest forms of furniture. The book opens with an overview of chest-building techniques; following are the chests, each of which features design and construction details, working drawings, and technical details of the more challenging pieces. Mies van der Rohe: Objects and Furniture Design (Objects and Furniture Design By Architects)

Mies van der Rohe: Objects and Furniture Design (Objects and Furniture Design By Architects) Review

Mies van der Rohe: Objects and Furniture Design (Objects and Furniture Design By Architects) Overview

German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is without doubt one of the pioneering masters of Modern architecture: The contemporary cityscape betrays his influence at every turn. Equally significant, though smaller in scale, are his adventures in furniture design. Like any good architect, Mies knew that architecture and furniture inevitably slip into dialogue and affect one another (he brought his knowledge of recent industrial technologies to bear on many of the chairs and tables he produced) and consequently, his earliest designs, beginning in the mid-1920s, were conceived for specific interiors. At first furniture design seemed more daunting than architecture: "There are endless possibilities and many problems--the chair has to be light, it has to be strong, it has to be comfortable. It is almost easier to build a skyscraper than a chair," he once declared. But Mies soon found novel ways to marry traditional luxurious fabrics and leathers with contemporary chrome frames, while effecting a distinct separation between the supporting structure and the supported surfaces. Today his Modern furniture pieces like the Barcelona chair, table, ottoman and day bed and the Bruno chair are acclaimed popular classics.

Alvar Aalto: Objects and Furniture Design By Architects

Alvar Aalto: Objects and Furniture Design By Architects Review

Alvar Aalto: Objects and Furniture Design By Architects Overview

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is the most prestigious Finnish architect of the last century, and the father of Nordic Modernism. He once said, "God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is at least for me an abuse of paper." In the U.S. Aalto's critical reception began with his design for the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 World Fair in New York: Frank Lloyd Wright described it as a "work of genius." After World War II, Aalto also designed MIT's student dormitory. Prior to this, the architect's Paimio Sanatorium (1929) and Viipuri Library (1935), both in Finland, had already attracted international praise. He was also an outstanding town planner, painter and sculptor. Aalto's Modernism entailed the use of natural materials, warm colors, and undulating lines, and he is considered an important early exponent of Organic Design as a result. Of his design work outside of architecture, Aalto's vases, lamps, glassware and laminated bent-plywood furniture (pioneered and produced through the design company he co-founded, Artek) are equally esteemed. Iconic pieces include the Savoy Vase, the Paimio Chair and the Beehive Lamp. This monograph on Aalto's highly collectible furniture designs expands our understanding of the diverse abilities of this influential architect/designer.

Textiles: A Handbook for Designers (Revised Edition)

Textiles: A Handbook for Designers (Revised Edition) Review

Textiles: A Handbook for Designers (Revised Edition) Overview

Practical information usually gained only through years of work experience and word of mouth is presented in this handbook for textile designers, students, interior designers and others who use textiles in their work.

Textiles: A Handbook for Designers is a thorough study of the textile industry and the design processes and techniques used by professionals. With an overview of the textile industry and a thorough explanation of the designer's role, the text encourages adaptation of any design expertise into the processes, techniques, and formats characteristic of the textile industry.

Textiles is a compilation of information obtained from many different designers. Because each designer may work for years within only one segment of the market, this comprehensive view of studio practices throughout the industry should be meaningful even to practicing professionals. An indispensable reference work for artists who aspire to work with textile design as well as for professionals in the textile industry and related fields of interior and apparel design, the revised edition of Textiles covers the most recent developments as well as traditional practices.

    Sketching: The Basics (2nd printing)

Sketching: The Basics (2nd printing) Review

Sketching: The Basics (2nd printing) Overview

In 2011, following the phenomenal global success of Sketching, which has sold over sixty thousand copies in two years, authors Koos Eissen and Roselien Steur debut the sequel entitled Sketching: The Basics. In fact, prequel would be a better word for this new book, since it is aimed towards the novice designer. Whereas Sketching shows you how to draw various aspects of shape and form, and serves more as a reference book, The Basics explains things in more detail, taking the reader by the hand and guiding him step by step through all the various aspects of drawing that novice designers come up against.

The Basics explains the rudiments of learning to draw both clearly and comprehensively, using step-by-step illustrations, examples, and strategies. You will learn to use and master the different techniques and also how to apply sketches in the design process.

It is the perfect book for those just starting out in sketching, for the first years of art and design courses, and for those who wish to revise the basics of good sketching; it is a simple and efficient way of learning all you've ever wanted to know but have never had explained to you.

Koos Eissen is an associate professor at the Delft University of Technology and teaches freehand drawing classes at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Roselien Steur teaches at the Faculty of Visual Art and Design, Utrecht School of the Arts.
